FIRST CONNECTIONS – August 18, 2017

First Baptist Church Shawnee

Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

“Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper…Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, “Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” John 12:1-8

Sermon, Sunday, August 20, 2017: “Divine Revelation and Encouragement”; Ephesians 3:1-13; Paul Stevens

Graeson Griffin has joined our church staff as part time Contemporary Worship Leader.  Graeson is a recent graduate of OBU where he completed two degrees, one in music and one in physics.  He brings a great love for ministry combined with a truly gifted musical knowledge to this worship service.  His picture will soon be added to our church webpage so you can recognize him and make him feel welcomed.

Church Business Meeting, August 20, 6:00 pm

From Finance Committee: Need to get a recommendation on agenda to amend the previous request from Finance/Properties to raise to deductible on our insurance from $5,000 to $25,000.  Due to some credits Brotherhood was able to give us at this policy renewal date, we can raise the deductible to $7,500 and save the church $3,305 per year in premium vs. $3,175 we were going to save with the $25,000 deductible.

A Hand Up Hygiene Drive:

There are boxes located in the church office to collect hygiene drive items. The drive is sponsored by TEEM: “an interfaith 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to breaking the cycles of incarceration and poverty through education, personal development, and work readiness training.” Kris Steele called the church and asked permission to place these boxes. If you would like to donate, the items are just basic hygiene needs or you can also look at the list of items on the side of each box.
