First Connections – October 24, 2014

A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked. Psalm 84:10

 Family Promise

Due to the loss of one of the sponsoring churches, every 9 weeks there is a hole in the Family Promise schedule.  When that happens, one of the “regular” churches will house the families and all the other regular churches help by feeding the families and staying overnight.  Next week, St. Paul’s Methodist Church has agreed to house the families and First Baptist has agreed to feed and host (at St. Paul’s) on Thursday, October 30th.  If anyone would like to fix supper for the families (we do not have a count at this time), host from 6PM to 9PM or stay overnight on the 30th (all at St. Paul’s), please let me know.  My phone number is listed below.  You can also reach me at

FYI, First Baptist will be the housing church to fill the hole in the schedule for December 21-27.  Other churches will be helping that week to feed and host.  We will be on the regular schedule for December 14th through the 20th, so the families will be at our church for two weeks in a row!  What a great gift to give these families that they don’t have to move for two weeks.

Deacon Candidate Profiles

VOTE this coming Sunday, October 26 in morning worship service.

Carlos Feller     Wife: Mary Chung

Became a Christian: Fall of 1996

Joined First Baptist Church: November 2012

Ordained as a deacon: not ordained

Statement: My walk with Christ began when I was a teenager.  I accepted Jesus as my personal savior, was baptized, and joined an evangelical church at age 16.  I see Christ’s deliverance, guidance, and provision in every aspect of my life.  I believe it is my responsibility to use the gifts and talents that were given to me to serve others, to be a witness of the gospel of Christ, and to bring honor to Our Lord.

Eric Hopkins    Wife: Loree    Children: Heather Acock, Clint Hopkins, Bryan Hopkins

Became a Christian: Approximately 1970

Joined First Baptist Church: 1970, then again in 1991

Ordained as a deacon: 1992

Statement: FBC is very near to my heart.  I was lucky enough to be blessed with parents who raised me in the light of the Lord at FBC Shawnee.  I have known no other way.  It was wonderful to be brought up with many great influences within the church guiding my direction.  I was married at FBC to Loree in 1982.  She has been my partner for the last 32 years while raising our children within the church.  Throughout the years, Loree and I have been involved in many aspects of the church.  Serving as a deacon means to be a servant and is a way for me to give back to the church that I love.  I wish to be the very best that I can in service to God.

Richard Newberry    Wife: Laura    Children:  Nathan and Natalie Newberry

Became a Christian: at 11 years of age, baptized at home church, Mounds, OK

Joined First Baptist Church: 2003

Ordained as a deacon:  2010

Statement: I look forward to serving my church in whatever way I can.

Peter Purin     Wife: Julie  Children: Ezra and Henry

Became a Christian: High School

Joined First Baptist Church: September 2013, baptized then

Ordained as a deacon: not ordained

Statement: What it means to be a Christian is to believe in the Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).  It means I am to love my God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love my neighbor as myself.  It is to know that I am a sinner, and that the only path to forgiveness and salvation is through the sacrifice Jesus – God’s only Son - made on the cross.  I work out my faith with the power of the Holy Spirit-who lives in me-daily, “with fear and trembling”.  I use the Bible, the infallible Word of God, as my guide.  My place in this world is to love and serve others.
