First Connections – October 17, 2014

Happy are those who are strong in the Lord, who set their minds on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

When they walk through the Valley of Weeping,

it will become a place of refreshing springs,

where pools of blessing collect after the rains!

They will continue to grow stronger, and each of them will appear before God in Jerusalem.

Psalm 84:5-7

Deacon Candidate Profile

Carlos Feller     Wife: Mary Chung

Became a Christian: Fall of 1996

Joined First Baptist Church: November 2012

Ordained as a deacon: not ordained

Statement: My walk with Christ began when I was a teenager.  I accepted Jesus as my personal savior, was baptized, and joined an evangelical church at age 16.  I see Christ’s deliverance, guidance, and provision in every aspect of my life.  I believe it is my responsibility to use the gifts and talents that were given to me to serve others, to be a witness of the gospel of Christ, and to bring honor to Our Lord.

Eric Hopkins    Wife: Loree    Children: Heather Acock, Clint Hopkins, Bryan Hopkins

Became a Christian: Approximately 1970

Joined First Baptist Church: 1970, then again in 1991

Ordained as a deacon: 1992

Statement: FBC is very near to my heart.  I was lucky enough to be blessed with parents who raised me in the light of the Lord at FBC Shawnee.  I have known no other way.  It was wonderful to be brought up with many great influences within the church guiding my direction.  I was married at FBC to Loree in 1982.  She has been my partner for the last 32 years while raising our children within the church.  Throughout the years, Loree and I have been involved in many aspects of the church.  Serving as a deacon means to be a servant and is a way for me to give back to the church that I love.  I wish to be the very best that I can in service to God.

Richard Newberry    Wife: Laura    Children:  Nathan and Natalie Newberry

Became a Christian: at 11 years of age, baptized at home church, Mounds, OK

Joined First Baptist Church: 2003

Ordained as a deacon:  2010

Statement: I look forward to serving my church in whatever way I can.

Peter Purin     Wife: Julie  Children: Ezra and Henry

Became a Christian: High School

Joined First Baptist Church: September 2013, baptized then

Ordained as a deacon: not ordained

Statement: What it means to be a Christian is to believe in the Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).  It means I am to love my God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love my neighbor as myself.  It is to know that I am a sinner, and that the only path to forgiveness and salvation is through the sacrifice Jesus – God’s only Son - made on the cross.  I work out my faith with the power of the Holy Spirit-who lives in me-daily, “with fear and trembling”.  I use the Bible, the infallible Word of God, as my guide.  My place in this world is to love and serve others.
